UPN claims major victory

With the help of 'Enterprise' and 'Buffy,' the network is moving on up

Ratings are like gold in the television industry, and while UPN might not have anywhere near the gold CBS got during the most recent November sweeps period, the suits at the Paramount netlet are clinking their champagne glasses happy to have more gold than The WB.

During November sweeps, UPN defeated The WB in total viewers for the first time (4.5 million to 4.3 million) as well in the 18-49 adult demographic (2.0 rating/5 share to 1.8/5), and tie for adults 18-34 (2.0/6).

And while The WB seems to be going after the female market ... UPN chief operating officer Adam Ware says that his network is looking for much more.

"We have really become the new destination for young adults -- not just women, but men and women," he told Zap2it.

UPN chief Dean Valentine said that the network had five objectives going into his season. First, the network wanted to succesfully launch "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" and "Enterprise," establish 8 p.m. anchors for each night, grow in all adult demographic ratings for the entire week, reinforce its brand as the "alternative destination" for young adults, and to increase advertising profits.

"Now with the end of November sweeps, I'm pleased to say we've achieved all those goals, and then some," Valentine said.

"Enterprise" and "Buffy" remain hits on The WB, but UPN officials are very concerned about "Roswell," which has been hammered in the ratings. Valentine said it's unclear still whether UPN will greenlight the show's remaining nine episodes.

"We're getting very close to making a decision," he said. "My best guess is that this is a show that deserves a little more time to find itself."

But there will be some shifting around, especially in "Roswell's" time slot. In January, UPN will insert two half-hour comedies after "Buffy" -- "As If" and "Random Years." However, these shows will not replace new episodes, and does not spell the end of "Roswell," Valentine said.
