No glamor in 'X-Files' ratings

Season premiere no where near spectacular in overnights

"The X-Files" didn't do too hot in its first ratings test of the ninth season, as it suffered against the uncensored telecast of the 1998 movie "Saving Private Ryan" and other factors Sunday night.

The ninth season premiere pulled in an 8.5 rating/11 share after plunging 21 percent (9.5/13 to 7.5/10) after its first half hour, according to Nielsen Overnight Metered Market ratings. The series only retained 83 percent of the audience of its lead-in, "Malcolm in the Middle," which earned a 10.3/14 for the night.

"The X-Files" finished behind the "I Love Lucy" special on CBS (12.0/18), and "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" on NBC, which finished with an 8.6/12.

One bright spot in the ratings race was the fact that "The X-Files" finished second in the 18-49 demographic, finishing behind ABC during the hour, which was showing "Saving Private Ryan."

Fox finished in third place for the evening with a 7.8/12, finishing ahead of NBC (6.5/10) and The WB (3.1/4). The top two watched networks for the evening were ABC with a 10.1/16 and CBS, who scored a 9.8/15.
