Spotnitz talks more 'X-Files'

Will Fox Mulder be making some kind of guest appearance this season?

The ninth season could possibly be the last for "The X-Files," especially after looking at the overnight ratings for the highly-advertised season premiere. But executive producer Frank Spotnitz said fans should still expect some surprises.

But will Fox Mulder be one of them?

"I don't think" David Duchovny will return, Spotnitz recently told Michael Ausiello of TV Guide. "We've got something in mind for the end of this season -- whether it's the end of the television series or the end of the season. [But] no, we're expecting he won't be in the show."

Spotnitz said that the eighth season premiere was shot with an assumption that Duchovny would not return for a ninth season.

"We still hoped that he [would] come back in some way, shape or form -- cameos even. but he's indicated he just needs a break from the character, and I totally respect that. There's no hard feelings whatsoever about that. The guy worked his ass off for a very, very long time. 'X-Files' is a very hard show."

However, Spotnitz still refuses to close the book on Duchovny as far as the upcoming season goes, especially with the actor maintaining close contact with series creator Chris Carter.

"Chris talks to him all the time, so it's not like a door isn't open and it couldn't happen," he said. "It could happen -- but I wouldn't count on it happening.

"Scully's (Gillian Anderson) role has been redefined this season, because starting in Episode 3, she's assigned to the FBI training academy in Quantico, Va., as a forensic investigator. She's actually no on the X-Files unit anymore. So she comes into the stories in a different way. And the role she plays is bent toward being a forensic pathologist."

So the question remains ... is Mulder the father of Scully's baby, that was born during the season finale?

"Um ... Mulder and Scully consummated their relationship, and I think they clearly believe that child is their's," Spotnitz said. "That is unambiguosly the meaning to me of that final scene last year. But the question that has not been answered -- and still is not answered in the two-parter -- is, 'how did Agent Scully, who is barren, get pregnant?'

"So Mulder and Scully had sex. But she had no eggs as far as we know -- so was it a miracle? And that is the queasy question she herself cannot answer and that continues to cause her anxiety ... the question of the baby is really the big mythology question this season."

Spotnitz also revealed that James Remar will be making a guest appearance in the third episode of the season, as well as a "very familiar face" who will show up in the eighth episode.

"I'm not ready to announce it yet," he said. "[It's] somebody that fans of [our] shows will definitely recognize."

SyFy Portal has previously reported that William B. Davis will be reprising his role as the Cigarette Smoking Man in the series.

But, is "The X-Files" preparing for the departure of Anderson at the end of this season?

"She never actually said that [she would be leaving] to me," he said. "I think she said it to Chris. I know there are other things she's eager to do after having done this character for so many years. She has said, like David, that she would like to do [X-Files] movies if that's in the cards. So that may well be what happens. If this show is accepted this year by the audience -- and I don't know if it will be -- it may well be that you have a Doggett (Robert Patrick) and Reyes (Annabeth Gish) television series and a Mulder and Scully film series."
