If Catwoman Could Turn Back Time ... Cher, Really?

By MICHAEL HINMAN
Aug-25-2008

Christopher Nolan has his choice of anyone to play Catwoman in the proposed third Batman film, including any number of gypsies, tramps and thieves. But instead, he has his sights set on one person: Cher.

Of course, fans are trying to see if playing Catwoman is all she really wants to do.

The Telegraph revealed as much even as other rumor-sharers have expressed belief that Angelina Jolie could be up for the role to potentially join who is reported to be Johnny Depp in the role of The Riddler. Guess it will come down to whomever has a heart of stone.

But enough with the Cher references ... "Cher is Nolan's first choice to play Catwoman," a studio executive reportedly told the British newspaper. "He wants to portray her like a vamp in her twilight years. The new Catwoman will be the absolute opposite of Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry's purring creations."

Meow.

While Cher might be known more for the skimpy outfits she wears on aircraft carriers, she is an accomplished actress. She was nominated for a Golden Globe for her role in "Mask" opposite "Caprica" star Eric Stoltz. She was nominated for a best supporting actress Oscar for "Silkwood" in 1983, and later would actually win the statue in 1987 for "Moonstruck."

Of course, any casting or even story talk is nothing but rumor right now, but word is that the third film could be called "The Caped Crusader," although that's likely nothing more than a working title.

The most recent installment, "The Dark Knight" starring Christian Bale and the late Heath Ledger, is expected to cross the $500 million domestic mark this week.
