Abrams Disappointed No 'Trek' Preview At Comic-Con

J.J. Abrams, who is helming the franchise's next motion picture, said that no sneak peaks will be shown at this year's Comic-Con, the last one before the movie debuts in May 2009, according to SciFi Wire.

According to Abrams, Paramount -- the studio behind Star Trek -- said they're not going to take anything. "'G.I Joe's' not going.'Transformers 2's' not going," he said.

This is something of a change from last year, when Paramount showed scenes from "Iron Man," helping whet the appetites of fans (and possibly contributing to the movie's box office take).

Abrams, who admits that the Trek film is not yet near completion, feels his project is a different animal than "Iron Man."

"Our visual effects, unlike something like 'Iron Man,' we have well over 1,000 visual-effects shots," Abrams said. "It's a huge thing. So i'm very disappointed because the characters are so good, the actors are so good that I would have been psyched just to show some of the stuff that's about the people. It's not really about the visual effects. But with so little done. And this was a big kind of strategic decision on Paramount's, part. so I was disappointed."

However, Abrams recently has shared some encouraging news about the film itself.

While promoting his new show on Fox called "Fringe," Abrams said his Star Trek is not a parody.

"So the idea of maintaining character relationships, the dynamic between the characters, was key," he said. "I never saw how Kirk and Spock became so connected. And that's what this movie does. And it does it with the entire family of the Enterprise."

Also, Abrams said during an interview at the Television Critics Association summer press tour that the film will have less of a 1960s feel, and will have current sensibilities in it.

"I feel like there's a certain thing that you can't really hold onto, which is, ... there's a kind of kitschy quality that must go if it's going to be something that you believe is real."
