By MICHAEL HINMANJeff Immelt, the chief executive officer of GE, "has made it clear" that NBCU is important to the company, NBC's chief executive Jeff Zucker told the Associated Press last week. The news come as GE announced it wanted to spin off the lighting and appliances that make GE, well, GE. This was after it jettisoned its plastics business for $11.6 billion to a company in Saudi Arabia.
"In the last 12 months, GE has been incredibly supportive," Zucker said. "There's no question that consumer-facing businesses are struggling right now. I think it'll hold up pretty well for us, and the flip side is that we're making acquisitions."
One of those acquisitions was The Weather Channel, which it bought last week for $3.5 billion from Landmark Communications. That joins the $875 million purchase of Oxygen last year.
NBCU, of course, is the home of many science-fiction and fantasy programming. That includes "Knight Rider" and "Heroes" on NBC, "Battlestar Galactica" and "Stargate: Atlantis" on SciFi Channel, and formerly "The 4400" on USA.
