First 'Battlestar' Movie Coming From Jane Espenson?

By MICHAEL HINMAN
Jul-03-2008

Although no new telemovies from NBC Universal have been announced, it's possible that when "Battlestar Galactica" returns to the television movie realm, Jane Espenson will be the writer kicking it off.

The blog site Galactica Sitrep says it has received a report from unnamed sources that the former "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" writer who also penned some memorable episodes of "Battlestar Galactica" will take a crack at the first movie, which also will be directed by series star Edward James Olmos.

If this news does turn out to be true, it will contradict what supervising producer David Weddle told SyFy Radio just a few weeks ago. Weddle said that he and writing partner Bradley Thompson would write the first movie.

"It would go back into history to tell part of the story that has never been told," Weddle said. "We have very definite ideas of what that story would be. I think it would be very cool and fans will really like it. It won't add any new chapters, but it will enrich their sense of depth and texture."

In Galactica Sitrep's original story, the site did not mention that the news it was reporting was a change from what Weddle had confirmed a short time before, but in later correspondence with SyFy Portal said it was definitely a change, and despite it being a rumor, said it had been corroborated.

SyFy Portal is trying to get confirmation about the change from David Weddle, but the site is still awaiting a response. Also, initial word back from Edward James Olmos' camp is that he's not scheduled to direct any further outings of "Battlestar Galactica" this year, and his current schedule may make such a venture time-prohibitive. However, Olmos has been heavily involved in post-production of "Battlestar Galactica," and were awaiting a response directly from the actor to either confirm or deny that such a move was taking place, admitting it was still possible.

As always, none of the new information has been confirmed by anyone involved with the show, so it should be treated as any rumor would.
