'Smallville' Casts Some Familiar Faces For Villains

By MICHAEL HINMAN
Jun-19-2008

If Doomsday looks a little familiar when you turn on the upcoming season of "Smallville," then you really do pay attention to science-fiction.

Sam Witwer, who played Crashdown in the first and second seasons of "Battlestar Galactica," has been cast to play the new evil Doomsday in "Smallville" this season, according to Michael Ausiello. He'll be joined by Cassidy Freeman as Tess, a "sexy and vengeful firecracker with whom Lex hires to run his empire in his absence."

Witwer has had an interesting genre career, even beyond "Battlestar Galactica." Getting his start in 2001 as a guest on "ER," he played Marrow in an episode of "Dark Angel" in 2002, John Stoler in the popular "Angel" episode "Shiny Happy People," and Colonial Xindi-Arboreal in the "Star Trek: Enterprise" episode "The Shipment" in 2003.

Witwer also starred as the voice of The Guardian of Forever in the fan-created series "Star Trek: New Voyages," although he was credited there as Simon Judas Raye, according to Internet Movie Database. He also played Private Jessup in "Stephen King's The Mist" last year, and played Neil Perry who claimed to be the Ice Truck Killer in three episodes of the Showtime series "Dexter."

Freeman most recently appeared in "Austin Golden Hour," which also starred Justin Hartley, who will return as The Green Arrow full-time this season.

"Smallville" returns to The CW in September.
