Review: 'Battlestar Galactica' - Guess What's Coming To Dinner: Part 1

The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS for "Guess What's Coming to Dinner: Part 1", the seventh episode of the final season of "Battlestar Galactica."

Another "Part One" episode. Come on guys, this is a serialized drama. Everything is "to be continued". Despite that minor gripe, this was a fine yet unspectacular episode in "Battlestar Galactica's" final season.

The warp speed jump at the beginning provided the action and drama for the episode, but it was the strange alliances that are forming that drove the episode. As unlikely as the Cylon Rebel/Galactica alliance is, the connection between Baltar and Roslin is equally unsettling.

The final five storyline is developing a bit slowly, but the four Galactica crew members who have already been revealed have all engaged in out of character behaviors. People are starting to notice. With the season nearing its halfway point, it is getting to be time that one of them gets discovered. It is inevitable, and it will make for better drama if they are revealed individually.

I know we are supposed to be pulling for the Galactica crew here, but the line between Cylon and human is really getting blurry this season. When the Cylons plan their betrayal, they in fact are simply emulating human behavior. Neither side is to be trusted.

The Cylons apparently are becoming more human. Are the humans, in fact becoming more like machines? Natalie Six says the human haven't changed. I am not so sure. Lee Adama has become much more dogmatic and role driven this season, forsaking his personal feelings for his sense of duty. I'll be curious to see if we see further examples of the humans becoming dehumanized.

What Worked

Felix Gaeta's singing was both pleasant and creepy at the same time.

Tigh is really starting to look guilty all the time. He looks like the most likely candidate to reveal himself as one of the final five.

What Didn't Work

I really don't like the evolution of Lee Adama's character this season. I liked him better as a pilot than as a politician. And his clashes with Starbuck and his father were much more genuine than his clashes with Roslin. Perhaps he is being primed to become Roslin's successor after her death, but would the creative team really let the fleet reach earth without her?
