Characters Find Their Place In 'Stargate: Continuum'

"Stargate: The Ark Of Truth" may have been the conclusion to the Ori story, but in the next movie, "Stargate: Continuum," fans will get to see a whole lot more character exploration than the series ever had time for. And that is one of the things writer and executive producer Brad Wright is most proud of.

There "are things that I could type in an episode of television, but would be the first things to go once I got in the concept meeting because I just wouldn't have the schedule for it," he told SciFi Wire. "That's time-eating material. You have to move a whole unit to a location and shoot what is ultimately three seconds or five seconds of film."

In the movie, Col. Mitchell (Ben Browder) and Col. Carter (Amanda Tapping) return to Earth after attending the execution of the last Goa’uld System Lord to find that their entire timeline has been altered. Aside from the Stargate program never existing, Daniel (Michael Shanks) is still considered a fringe scientist raving that pyramids are alien landing sites, Carter was killed in a shuttle accident and Mitchell never existed. Worst of all, this world has not intentions of trying to restore the timeline.

The movie is aiming for a standalone adventure that will allow new viewers to sit down and watch the self-contained story but also contain the same blend of humor and action that the series is renowned for … only it has been ramped up a few notches. Long-time fans will also be happy to hear that not only is Richard Dean Anderson reprising his role as Col. Jack O’Neill, but Don S. Davis will also be making a comeback as well.

"It's much more fun in some ways to do a movie, because the story can evolve the way it's supposed to," Wright said. "It doesn't have to owe anything to the episode before or the episode after. That was the fun part, to actually write a movie and not just a long episode."

“Stargate: Continuum” launches on DVD July 29.
