Fox Picks Up 'Fringe,' Cancels 'New Amsterdam'

J.J. Abrams may be doing post-production on the next "Star Trek" movie, but he's still staying quite busy in television.

Fox has given a series greenlight to Abrams' latest project "Fringe," according to The Hollywood Reporter, which will join "Dollhouse" from Joss Whedon on the network's schedule. "Dollhouse" has already been given a seven-episode order, and is expected to be a mid-season show. It's not clear when "Fringe" will premiere, but that likely will take place in the fall.

Those pickups mean that "New Amsterdam," however, is finished, according to TV Guide. The show which didn't carry a lot of confidence to begin with despite premiering with an overnight rating of an 8.3 rating/12 share. However, by the time the show wrapped up, it had lost more than half its audience, finishing below a 4.0 household rating, according to Fast National data from Nielsen Media Research.

ABC is looking to give a greenlight finally to the British series remake "Life on Mars" now that it has struck a deal with rights-holder David E. Kelley that involved renewing the William Shatner vehicle "Boston Legal" for a fifth season. That, of course, means that Kelley will not be the showrunner for "Mars," and that the network will have to bring someone else in.

The original British series starred John Simm, who recently played The Master in a three-part season finale episode of "Doctor Who." The show is about two cops from different time periods after Simms' character of Sam Tyler suffers an accident and wakes up in 1973.

The American version stars Jason O'Mara as Sam Tyler as well as Rachelle Lefevre and "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine's" Colm Meaney.

"Fringe" centers around an FBI agent who has to work with a group of scientists to help solve some rather strange cases. It stars Joshua Jackson, Charlotte Rampling and Kirk Acevedo.
