'Eureka' To Lighten Its Load

If fans were feeling a little bogged down by some of the dark and brooding storytelling that "Eureka" had last season, then it sounds like the upcoming third season may sit a little better.

According to producers Charlie Craig and Jaime Paglia, the upcoming season will include lighter stories and a greater feeling of fun. And as part of their plan for lightening the load they will also be including a few salutes to some popular movies.

"One that we've been wanting to do for a long time, 'Groundhog Day,' I think, is the perfect episode thematically for our characters, especially for this guy," Paglia said about Sheriff Jack Carter (Colin Ferguson). "It involves 2 a.m. and ice water. That's all I'm going to say. Over and over again."

Throughout the course of the third season, the series will not only tackle some of those fun ideas in a series of standalone adventures, but there will also be a deepening sense of mystery about the entire town.

"Obviously every episode is still very stand-alone in terms of the mystery that has to be resolved this week," Paglia said. "We do have an ongoing deeper mystery that will be stretched out over those first eight [weeks of the upcoming third season]. Season 1, we were all wanting to find our show, and I think that overall we were pretty pleased with what we came up with. Some were a little hit or miss. But the tone was very difficult to capture."

Some of the episodes in the second season strayed a little bit from where they should have, Paglia said, and because of that, some of the relationships will be restored in the third season.

"Eureka" returns to the SciFi Channel later this summer.
