'Moonlight' Has Better Chance Than 'Jericho'

"Jericho" fans lost their show ... at least for now ... but will fans of "Moonlight" have to suffer through a similar fate?

Nina Tassler, president of CBS Entertainment, says both of its genre shows are on two different paths.

"One thing 'Moonlight' has going for it is it wins its time period," Tassler told The Hollywood Reporter. "Unlike 'Jericho,' 'Moonlight' is not serialized."

The question came up as fans wondered if CBS would continue to give series that might not be getting the strongest ratings a chance to continue. The network had revived "Jericho" after canceling it at the end of the 2006-07 season, but then canceled the show against last month when viewership levels dropped below its previous lows.

"Moonlight" made the schedule as a presentation rather than a production company putting together a pilot, and that may be a strategy that CBS continues to use especially in light of quality fall-off from a pilot to a regular season that happened this past season.

"One of the things we were really able to do is explore a more cost-effective model," Tassler said. "What we watched year-after-year are these big splashy pilots get stripped down for the series and they no longer resemble the pilot. It's much better to shoot a presentation, then make adjustments in an additive way."

"Jericho" was put in what some has called a death slot at 10 p.m. on Tuesdays, as nothing has been able to survive there for the network. Tassler, however, has an easy explanation on why that's true.

"We just haven't found the right show to go there yet."

"Moonlight" returns with new episodes April 25 at 10 p.m. ET on CBS.
