'Stargate: Atlantis' A Must-See Tonight

This story contains MINOR SPOILERS for the fourth season premiere of "Stargate: Atlantis."

I am not sure if it's because producers are no longer tied between two shows, or what. But the new season of "Stargate: Atlantis" isn't just exciting ... it is head-and-shoulders above what any of us have seen so far.

Beginning at 10 p.m. ET on SciFi Channel, "Atlantis" premieres the first half of its two-part season premiere, "Adrift," where the city of Atlantis is aimlessly floating in space with nowhere to go and power fading fast. It's up to Rodney McKay (David Hewlett) and his team to figure out how to get the city to safety, while Samantha Carter (Amanda Tapping) tries to find the lost city herself.

And some tough decisions have to be made because Elizabeth Weir, the valiant leader of the Atlantis expedition played by Torri Higginson is dying, and there's nothing that Dr. Keller (Jewel Staite) can do. Except ...

Well, you'll have to see for yourself.

It seems that SciFi Channel and MGM are sparing no expense on special effects, at least for the season premiere, as we get some exterior view shots of Atlantis like you've never seen before. Including one amazing 360-degree spin effect around two spires of the city.

There is a sense of loss coming into this season, since it's no secret that Weir won't be around too much longer. And while Tapping has said her character will make some significant changes going into this season, the producers are giving her a chance to adjust naturally -- and left the fans adjust at the same time. I mean, we've all known Carter for more than a decade, you can't just throw her in black leather and make it all different. And the writers know that.

I don't know what it is about "Atlantis" that keeps drawing me back for more and more. Some people call it a soap opera, others call it cheesy. But for me, there are some very funny stories, and some very poignant stories. The producers seem to have perfected when it's time to use what, and that has made "Atlantis" a joy to watch week after week after week.

And even though I am tired of the Replicators, you have to admit ... they are pretty bad ass.

The two-part premiere is a watcher from start to finish, and it will make you glad you skipped out on going to the club so that you can watch it live.

"Stargate: Atlantis" airs Fridays at 10 p.m. ET on SciFi Channel.
