Television, Video Game In 'Sanctuary' Future?

The people behind the Web series, which can be found at Sanctuary For All, say that while their goal was to bring this show to computers everywhere, it doesn't have to stay there.

"You have to think of an idea that works seamlessly across multiple formats," Damian Kindler, the Stargate producer who is the creator of "Sanctuary" and chief executive of Stage 3 Media which produces the series, told SyFy Portal's Marx Pyle. You want "something you can push to mobile phones, to your iPod, to television, to DVD, [and something that] is a good interactive online experience and is a great standalone game. We create one type of entertainment -- different forms of it -- but this is the sort of format. We want to be the pioneers, the innovators, the perfectionists. That is it. That is our goal. That's the plan."

Did Kindler say something about a video game?

"Yes," he said. "I would tell you more, but the lawyer on the other side would come crashing through this wall."

Visual effects producer Ron Martin -- no stranger to computer graphic design and entertainment -- was a little more forthcoming.

"We have a specific game strategy and we are starting down that path of online casual gaming and building up to more invested console gaming," Martin said.

As far as television goes, even if "Sanctuary" were to get a small screen deal, Kindler made it clear that the plan is still to always release the show on the Internet first.

Producing episodes for the Web on a limited budget is difficult, but even if there isn't enough money for everything a director wants, there is still plenty of ways to shine above everything else available online.

"There are obviously critics who want it to look like a feature film," Martin said. "However, there is a very loyal fan base and I think once people see the other aspects of the show that will be released, being some of the green screen footage itself ... you will see the appreciation grow even more."

There certainly won't be any space fight scenes like "Battlestar Galactica," but they also have a much larger budget, Kindler said.
