By MICHAEL HINMANNew sets have been built featuring a much sleeker look for the life-sucking villains, but it seems only certain members of the cast and crew even know what they look like.
Brigitte Prochaska, the unit publicist for "Stargate: Atlantis," mentioned the new Wraith sets while giving online journalists a tour of Bridge Studios where "Atlantis" is filmed Tuesday morning as part of SciFi Channel's Digital Media Tour. Unfortunately for the journalists, however, the new Wraith sets were not a part of the overall tour.
The Wraith also will be getting a bit sexier, however. "Atlantis" costume designer Valerie Halverson showed off some new costumes, including a stunning dress for a Wraith queen that is both "regal and ominous," she said.
The Atlantis crew will get some adjustments to their uniforms, including some new traveling clothes for characters such as Ronon (Jason Momoa) and Teyla (Rachel Luttrell).
"We simplified a lot of the color contrasts," Halverson said of the new expedition uniforms. Amanda Tapping, who moves her character of Samantha Carter over to the show from "Stargate SG-1," will also get a new uniform that will include leather when she is out on missions, and a look similar to former Atlantis expedition chief Elizabeth Weir (Torri Higginson), but "softer."
With Tapping joining the show, there is some concern that "Atlantis" may become too much like "SG-1," but fans don't have to worry.
"We share the same mythology, and there are going to be similarities," said David Hewlett, who plays Dr. Rodney McKay on "Atlantis."
"I think that's a good thing. We don't need to be completely different because there are still more stories to tell from a different angle, a different perspective."
