'Andromeda' to have darker season

There will be some minor changes to "Gene Roddenberry's Andromeda" when the show returns for its second season in syndication this fall, one of them a look into the darker side of the characters.

In a recent interview with Cult Times, Kevin Sorbo (Capt. Dylan Hunt) said not only will there be an episode featuring a new perspective on Trance Gemini (Laura Bertram), but a new villain will be introduced through the first part of the new season as well.

"The (episode) we've just wrapped is called 'The Interview,' but I have a feeling they are going to change the title," Sorbo said. "I don't know why. It's an interesting episode for Trance Gemini because it finally gives a chance for the audience to see a little darker side to her character. Of course, when I say 'dakrer,' I mean just that.

"Typically, her character embodies goodness. She's very God-like, and we're getting more into that, but this episode also shows she is someone not to be screwed around with, to use the English phrase."

Sorbo shared a little bit about the new alien race that will be the new foe of the Andromeda Ascendant as well.

"We're going to introduce a brand new enemy, a nasty crop of villains called the Pyrians," he said. "Their name is sort of taken from 'pyro' as they are very fiery looking creatures -- a computer-generated species. Their introduction kind of ties in with Trance's story because she's being bothered -- not by these Pyrians -- but by other people who don't like her kind. We're dealing with a little racism and issues like that."

Sorbo said he felt there would be some considerable improvement this year on the show which finished as the top-rated original run syndicated action hour last season.

"I think that now, coming into Season 2, we're better," he said. "The first season of any show is always tough, but that's often because there is so much expositional dialogue that has to be delivered. That whole explaining who everybody is and how they fit in takes time.

"I think one of the problems we had with 'Andromeda' was that it was a little too complicated to begin with. [Co-executive producer] Robert Hewitt Wolfe is very passionate about his craft. He is a tremendous writer and can see the whole picture, but the rest of us need time to catch up."
